Agent Orange and Herbicides Update for Veterans

It appears from the VA government site, you no longer have to prove that you were exposed to Agent Orange or herbicides, just that you were in Vietnam or Korea, or near Vietnam/Korea in, for instance, Thailand...i.e., close proximity to, on a ship in a harbor, between 1962 and 1975, and are suffering from anyone of many different diseases, health conditions, which may have sprung from that time.
The conditions for eligibility are varied and widespread, for instance, veterans who were crew members on C-123 planes flown after the Vietnam War are eligible and veterans who served anywhere near where herbicides were stored.

Covered dates of service:

1. In Vietnam anytime between January 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975, including brief visits ashore or service aboard a ship that operated on the inland waterways of Vietnam
2. In or near the Korean demilitarized zone anytime between April 1, 1968 and August 31, 1971

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and ALS are both subject to consideration, as well.

And like government reg's, the stipulations are pages and pages long. For instance, a discussion of symptoms:

"Symptomatology shown in the prescribed period [see below] may have no particular significance when first observed, but in the light of subsequent developments it may gain considerable significance. Cases in which a chronic condition is shown to exist within a short time following the applicable presumptive period, but without evidence of manifestations within the period, should be developed to determine whether there was symptomatology which in retrospect may be identified and evaluated as manifestation of the chronic disease to the required 10-percent degree."

My translation of the above: After 90 days of continuous service, if you had even the tiniest symptom within one-year after discharge, you are eligible. That tiny symptom, which could have been adjudged then as nothing, might have manifest itself over years to become chronic in present day.

You can learn how to apply, contact your local VA hospital or office on this page.

Evelyn Smith Spillers' husband, Charlie, has a new book.

Highly rated on Amazon, one reviewer, in part:

"I just finished reading Confessions of an Undercover Agent written by Charlie Spillers. The first thing that struck me was, Man, is this guy an amazing story teller. The second thing that struck me was, Charlie Spillers is one of the most courageous men I have encountered. The true story of Spillers as an undercover cop, a narcotics agent, and a federal prosecutor is delivered in both an entertaining and humble manner that makes a reader feel like they are sitting on a porch with Charlie. He regales tales in a fun but modest way that pulls you in to the laughs, spine tingling, and palm sweating details that only a master story teller could do. But don’t get me wrong, these aren’t spun tales. ..."

Just found this on youtube today, pointed out to me by Steve Hill. It's "Turning Home," a song with lyrics written by Travis Hill, son of Steve and Jean. Travis was a founder of  Carnival Music in Nashville, Tennessee. He wrote the song with Kenny Chesney, and Travis has written two of Kenny's #1 hits. A poet to be proud of, for sure!

Get out your hanky, Travis has written words that could very well be about our class, our town, and the memories and wonderful connections we are all blessed with. The woman from Georgia posting this on youtube has supplied her own pictures. It is sung by David Nail. (Note: if you see something written by Scooter Caruso, that's Travis' pen name.)
